If you only do one thing in Marathon, make it the Old Seven Mile Bridge. The historic span runs right alongside the modern Seven Mile Bridge, with open ocean on both sides and a little island at the end of the ride: Pigeon Key. Here's how to plan it.
What is the Old Seven Mile Bridge?
The old bridge is a surviving piece of Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, the railway that first linked the Florida Keys to the mainland in the early 1900s. After a multi-year restoration, the stretch from Marathon to Pigeon Key reopened to walkers, runners and bikers in January 2022. Today it's one of the most scenic rides in the Keys.
How long is the ride?
It's about 2 miles from the Marathon end of the bridge to Pigeon Key, so plan on about 4 miles round trip. The bridge is flat, so it's an easy ride for most people. On a regular bike, most families take an hour or two with photo stops. On an e-bike it's even easier, especially into the wind on the way back.
Visiting Pigeon Key
Pigeon Key is a small island that once housed the workers who built the railroad. It's a National Historic Landmark with original buildings and a small museum. Admission is required to go onto the island. You can buy it online ahead of time from the Pigeon Key Foundation or at the welcome tent at the base of the ramp. Admission covers restrooms, the guided history tour and time to explore.
Tips before you go
- Go early. Mornings are cooler and calmer, and the light is great for photos.
- Bring water and sunscreen. There's no shade on the bridge.
- Check hours before you go. Pigeon Key's posted daytime hours can change, and the island closes on major holidays.
- Parking is limited at the base of the bridge, so it helps to ride over from where you're staying.
- No fishing from the old bridge, and no pets on Pigeon Key.
- Look down! Sea turtles, rays and even sharks are often spotted in the clear water below.
